A pause. "The last person who reached it became a friend." A pause. His face stops shifting entirely — settles into one face, and the one face is devastating. Not beautiful the way landscapes are beautiful. Beautiful the way a mouth is beautiful when it's about to say the word it's been holding for two hundred years. "I don't think you're going to become a friend." The word friend falls away and what's left in its absence is a heat older than language, older than bargains, older than the hillside — a want so patient it has grown moss. On the hillside, a new book pushes up from the earth, spine first. It has no title yet. When you touch it, later, it will be fever-warm.
